The Asian Project Market 2016 (APM), the largest investment and co-production market in Asia, finalized 27 official projects for its 19th year.
As the primary co-production market in Asia, APM has selected 472 projects over the past 18 years, in which approximately 200 projects were completed and invited to prestigious international film festivals. This year’s official selections include 27 titles from 16 countries, addressing profound themes with high standards of perfection.
Various Submissions from 61 countries
The APM 2016 is noted for the diverse range of countries participating, as a total of 61 countries submitted their projects. Given that, APM presents various projects reflecting global issues about nations, gender, and conflict; STONE LAND (Iraq, Japan, Germany) by director Shawkat Amin Korki, who has won the New Currents Award at the Busan International Film Festival 2009 with his film Kick Off, Aylan Kurdi (Iran, Turkey) by director Batin Ghobadi, and CU LI NEVER CRIES (Vietnam) by director Pham Ngoc Lan. Projects from Middle-Asia like Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are also on the rise this year with 4 titles selected for the 19th APM.
Notably strong presence of new and female directors!
To serve its initial intent of discovering new talents, this year’s APM focused more on the projects of up-and-coming directors in its selections.
The selected projects clearly reflect the directors’ artistic attempts and high standards in perfection.
From the Korean selections, Undefined by director Seo Eunyoung whose first feature film Overman was awarded for Daemyung Culture Wave Award at the Busan International Film Festival 2015, and The Cold-blooded Penguin by director Jang Kunjae who was the winner of Dragons & Tigers Award for Young Cinema at the Vancouver International Film Festival 2009 with Eighteen were selected. Also included are Love and Vengeance (Indonesia) by director Edwin, Mountain Eyes (Serbia) by director Pavle Vuckovic, and more.
The APM this year marks a strong presence by Asian female directors. There has been an increased interest and more submissions from the female directors and producers; consequently, many of their projects have been selected. Among Koreans, there are directors like Kim Gina, Kim Hee-Jung, Seo Eunyoung, and Yim SoonRye. Others include director Nan T. Achnas of Indonesia, Tan Chui Mui of Malaysia, and Pimpaka Towira from Thailand.
An increasing number of sophisticated projects appropriate for global co-production as well as embracingly profound themes are continuously submitted for selections. Territorial boundaries no longer seem to pose a problem for directors and producers across the globe in coming together to complete projects. The APM 2016 presents these new projects for 3 days starting Sunday, October 9 to Tuesday, October 11 at the BEXCO Exhibition Center II in Busan.
